Intrigued to know the difference between what the official MPG figures for your car are, and what you’re actually achieving whilst driving? Every car manufactured since 2000 has the official government figures- now we’ll show you how to manually work out your car’s MPG so you can see what you’re really achieving. Before you record your car’s MPG manually, it’s important, particularly if you are going to compare it to the official figures, that you prepare your car and match your type of journey. Once you’ve completed this first step, you’re ready to record your cars real MPG.
Step 2
Keep a record of any subsequent fuel purchases, recording how many litres of fuel you’ve put in (it’s not necessary to completely fill the tank again until you’re ready to calculate your MPG) Step 3
When ready to calculate your cars MPG, fill the tank up again, noting how many litres of fuel you have put in your car since you first filled up, and how many miles you’ve covered. Step 4
Divide the mileage by the number of litres used, and then to convert to MPG multiply by 4.546.
